Inter-Agency Council on Child Abuse and Neglect

ICAN's mission is to improve the lives of children and families at risk and those served by the Child Welfare and Protection systems. Black Infant Health (BIH) Program - LA County Public Health

The Black Infant Health Program (BIH) was created at the State level as a result of California Senate Bill 165 of the Budget Act of 1989 to address the high rate of infant mortality for African American families. Los Angeles County was among the first health jurisdictions to receive funding from the State to implement a culturally specific perinatal intervention aimed at reducing the African American infant mortality rate. Despite a gradual decline in African American infant mortality in LA County since 2007,

African American infants continue to die at more than 3 times the rate observed for white and Asian infants, the two racial/ethnic groups with the lowest infant mortality rates.

Black Women for Wellness,

bwwla.org Black Women for Wellness is a community-based grassroots organization in Los Angeles, CA that works to address the health and well-being of Black women and girls through health education, empowerment, and advocacy. The organization started as a group of women who—concerned with the health and well-being of Black babies—teamed up with the Birthing Project to implement the Shangazi Program. This program matched pregnant women to mentors who coached parents from pregnancy until the child was at least one year old. Within 4 years of implementation, BWW began moving upstream to address systems and legislative policy by creating a California-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 1997.

California African American Museum,

California African American Museum (CAAM) is a museum located in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, California. The Museum focuses on enrichment and education on the cultural heritage and history of African Americans with a focus on California and western United States. Admission is free to all visitors. Their mission statement is "to research, collect, preserve, and interpret for public enrichment the history, art and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States."[1]

CAAM hosts independent and collaborative educational programs both on and off site of lectures, workshops, innovative programs, and hands-on activities that serve public and private school students, museum patrons and community visitors.

Shields for Families,

SHIELDS for Families, Inc. was founded in 1991 to address the epidemic of infants prenatally exposed to drugs. Three women, Xylina Bean, Kathryn Icenhower, and Norma Mtume shared the belief that they could help shape the future of these infants and their parents. And they have. SHIELDS for Families started in a trailer on the campus of Martin Luther King Jr./ Drew Medical Center. SHIELDS’ first program was the GENESIS Program. Shields for Families has grown to serve more than 10,000 families each year, employing more than 350 full-time staff. Today, SHIELDS is a nationally and internationally recognized organization that offers award-winning programs in Los Angeles’ most challenged communities.

Healthy African American Families,

Healthy African American Families II (HAAF) was founded in 1992 by the late Dr. Loretta Jones. It was originally funded by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to investigate low birth weight and infant mortality in African American women in Los Angeles. HAAF’s mission now is to improve the health outcomes of the African American, Latino, Korean, and other minority communities in Los Angeles County by enhancing the quality of care and advancing social progress through education, training and collaborative partnering with community stakeholders, academia, researchers, and government representatives.

National Association of Black Social Workers,

The National Association of Social Workers was created in 1968 by a group of Black Socials Workers to address the social issues of the Black Community. Advocacy groups comprised of people of African ancestry also became part of the group to focus on issues of racism and poverty in America. Their common goal was Black liberation, racial equity and self-determination and improved social work practices.

The National Medical Association (NMA) is the largest and oldest national organization representing African American physicians and their patients in the United States. The NMA is a 501(c) (3) national professional and scientific organization representing the interests of more than 50,000 African American physicians and the patients they serve. NMA is committed to improving the quality of health among minorities and disadvantaged people through its membership, professional development, community health education, advocacy, research and partnerships with federal and private agencies. Throughout its history the National Medical Association has focused primarily on health issues related to African Americans and medically underserved populations; however, its principles, goals, initiatives and philosophy encompass all ethnic groups.
